Located
on the Clear Water river is at the lower end of Mystery
Country. Similar to Dafoe Lake it lies about 70 air miles to
the south east of Thompson.
This lake is separated by a set of rapids that only allow
access to the lower lake by a portage trail of about a 3rd
of a mile. Giving opportunity to experience seeing moose,
wolves or even wandering Black Bear. Thus the name of one of
Mystery Country’s finest Northern and Walleye fisheries.
The
tumbling rapids allow for fishing action like you have never
experienced unless you have been one of the fortunate few!
The two resident Eagle families that make Bearhead their
summer home are possibly the only other competition for the
hundreds of fish trying to traverse the rapids. Evidence of
an early dwellers fishing circle lies beneath on the
rock-strewn bottom, that can be seen when the water is low
enough.
The cabin situated on an island about three quarters of a
mile from the rapids, is made from the white spruce that
tower straight as an arrow along the lower lake portage
trail. Evidence of the hard work that must have been done
still lies in the underbrush as you walk the path that early
travellers navigated in days gone by. The ridgepole that
supports the roof overhead makes you wonder how they ever
managed to lift it there. The rustic construction of
Bearhead cabin is modernized with hot & cold running water,
hot shower, propane lights, fridge, stove, gas grill and
satellite phone.
2001-2002 saw the old outboard motors replaced with newer
four stroke Evinrude motors.
The pleasure of being able to back troll without the smell
of a two-cycle smoke is a welcome improvement to our guest’s
enjoyment. With three boats at the main camp and another
four on the lower lake there is no shortage of equipment for
groups of eight or less. Continuing improvements will be
done as funds become available. Planned for 2004 is the
addition of an extra propane fridge and renovations to the
veranda.
